From Zero to Hero: A Journey Inspired by the University of Madras, Guindy Campus ! 

The prestigious award ceremony organized by The Academy of Sciences, Chennai (formerly Tamil Nadu Academy of Sciences) took place on March 18, 2025, at the University of Madras, Guindy Campus. This annual event recognizes young and senior scientists who have made significant contributions to the fields of science, research, and development. The awards were presented to distinguished scientists from various universities across Tamil Nadu.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. S. Sriman Narayanan, FASCh, Vice Chancellor of VELS University, Chennai, along with distinguished chief guests Dr. T. Murugesan, Vice Chancellor of B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science & Technology, Chennai, and Dr. J. Kumar, FASCh, Past President of the Academy of Sciences, Chennai, and former Vice Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University.

A highlight of the event was the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Dr. T. Ramasami, FASCh, former Secretary of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, and a Padma Bhushan awardee. His heartfelt acceptance speech was truly inspiring.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Sundramoorthy, Professor, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS), Chennai, was honored as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences, Chennai (2025). Reflecting on his transformative journey, Dr. Sundramoorthy shared how the University of Madras shaped his academic and professional life, serving as the foundation for his success.

A Life Transformed

“When I first stepped onto the Guindy Campus, I had nothing. I share this for students from rural Tamil Nadu who come from humble backgrounds. My journey began with schooling in Tamil medium, followed by a B.Sc. in Chemistry at Government Arts College, Cuddalore, where I struggled with English. Despite the challenges, I managed to pursue an M.Sc. in Chemistry with a good percentage.

Initially, I planned to work in the industrial sector at Cuddalore SIPCOT. However, the guidance of my uncles led me to pursue an M.Phil. in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Madras, Guindy Campus. That decision changed my life. The vibrant academic environment, the passion of professors, and the dedication of research scholars inspired me.

Surrounded by brilliant minds, I witnessed peers securing postdoc positions abroad, earning substantial salaries. Living in the university hostel provided me with the opportunity to interact with diverse scholars, shaping my ambition to pursue a Ph.D. abroad. I eventually earned a full Taiwan Government Fellowship for my Ph.D. studies in Taiwan.

The rigorous training and research spirit I gained at Guindy Campus equipped me to excel in research across Taiwan, Singapore, and the USA. Upon returning to India, I became an Assistant Professor at a private university, where I continued to collaborate with University of Madras professors as doctoral committee members. Their mentorship enriched the academic journey of my Ph.D. students.

After 21 years, I am honored to be elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences, Chennai. This achievement fills me with pride and gratitude towards my teachers and mentors. Today, I am fortunate to earn a respectable salary, guide numerous Ph.D. students, and secure government projects—all thanks to the transformative impact of the University of Madras.

A Moment to Remember

Attending the award ceremony was a milestone in my life. Listening to Padma Bhushan Dr. T. Ramasami’s inspiring speech was particularly memorable. He eloquently spoke about the immeasurable impact of one’s contributions, likening the soul’s worth to something beyond measure—a thought-provoking message that deeply resonated with me.

I sincerely thank the Academy of Sciences, Chennai, including Dr. R. Jayavel, Dr. N. Rajendran, Dr. N. Mathivanan, Dr. A. Stephen, Dr. T.M. Sridhar, and Dr. T. Ravi Shankaran, my parents and family for their unwavering support and guidance. 

Lastly, my heartfelt gratitude goes to the Government of Tamil Nadu and our education system for providing accessible, quality education. It is institutions like the University of Madras that continue to change lives, one student at a time. Dr. Ashok Kumar Sundramoorthy said.
