Rotary Club of Madras Hands Over 29 Houses for the Irular Community in Boomanjikulam Village Gummidipoondi, Thiruvallur District
The Rotary Club of Madras has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to social upliftment by donating 29 new homes to the marginalized Irular community in Boomanjikulam Village, Gummidipoondi. The Irular community, historically disadvantaged and facing significant socio-economic challenges, has long struggled with impoverishment, lack of secure housing, and limited access to basic amenities. This initiative is a part of Rotary’s larger mission to support underserved communities and enhance their living standards through sustainable development.
Each of the newly constructed houses spans 220 square feet, built with Reinforced cement concrete roofs to ensure durability and protection against extreme weather conditions. The homes come equipped with essential facilities, including bathroom, kitchen, and the traditional “thinnai” (a raised verandah area), providing a blend of modern functionality and cultural relevance. These houses, valued at Rs. 3.6 lakhs each, also feature complete plumbing and electrical installations, ensuring the residents’ access to water and electricity, both of which are critical for their daily living.
In addition to the structural provisions, beneficiaries will receive a hamper stocked with kitchen utensils, helping them transition smoothly into their new homes and begin their new chapter with dignity and security.
This Rs. 1 crore-plus project is a transformative one, replacing makeshift, unsafe dwellings with permanent, secure homes that promise privacy, all-weather protection, and better health and hygiene. These homes are not just shelters but symbols of stability and security for the Irular families. Access to basic sanitation facilities, proper plumbing, and reliable electricity will significantly improve their quality of life, reducing health risks and enhancing their overall well-being.
To further ensure the sustainability of the project, each house is equipped with solar power generation systems. This initiative helps the community overcome challenges posed by the unreliable electricity infrastructure and frequent power cuts in the region. The inclusion of solar power also reflects Rotary’s commitment to promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions.
In addition to the core amenities, the houses will be surrounded by carefully planned greenery, including plants and small gardens.

Together, they have turned an ambitious vision into a tangible reality, one that will have a lasting, positive impact on the lives of the Irular community.
This monumental project is yet another example of Rotary’s enduring dedication to creating meaningful, long-lasting change. By addressing the fundamental needs of disadvantaged communities, Rotary consistently demonstrates its mission to improve the lives of those it serves. The Irular community of Boomanjikulam will not only benefit from these new homes but also from the broader opportunities that come with secure living—better health, improved safety, and a stronger sense of belonging.
